Over the course of his ten year career as an artist, Vincent van Gogh produced ten graphic works: nine lithographs and one etching. Van Gogh was a great admirer of the British engravers whose works appeared in many of the popular magazines of the day. Mindful of these artists whose graphic works he collected with much enthusiasm, Van Gogh himself first began experimenting with lithography in 1882. Though encouraged by the results, it was a medium that Van Gogh would rarely return to.
The vast majority of information in this section comes from the excellent book The Graphic Work of Vincent van Gogh by Sjraar van Heugten and Fieke Pabst of the Van Gogh Museum (Waanders, 1995; ISBN: 90-400-9670-7). The information included in the webpages below, however, is only a small fraction of the material available in this invaluable reference. Van Heugten's and Pabst's book is exhaustive, well written and wonderfully well researched--highly recommended.
