Museo Soumaya
Mexico

Museo Soumaya
México

In this letter I want to talk about my visit to the Museo Soumaya located at Plaza Loreto in Mexico City, because thanks to the exhibition Six Centuries of Art: A hunderd great Masters, the Museum has two of your oils and one of your watercolors in exhibition:

  1. Peat Bog (F 1094, JH 398) (Watercolor)
  2. Shepherd with a Flock of Sheep (F 42, JH 517)
  3. Cottage with Peasant Coming Home (F 170, JH 824)

Let me tell you that I have seen the two oils paintings at the Museum, in another exhibition and in April 2004 while David Brooks came to Mexico City.

By the way, I want to tell you that at the main page of the Museum' site (http://www.soumaya.com/), at the exhibition page Six Centuries of Art: A hunderd great Masters and in the monthly brochures of the exhibition, the Museum has used photos of your oils to promote the exhibition, particularly at the August brochure they used some phrases of your letters to Anthon Van Rappard (Letters R 47 and R48) and to Theo (Letter 377), where you explain them about the oil Shepherd with a Flock of Sheep: F 42, JH 517:

"The good man did not deny this. And, after a visit to my studio, I made six preliminary sketches for him of subjects from country life - Shepherd with a Flock of Sheep: F 42, JH 517; Potato Planting: F 172, JH 514; Potato Harvest with Two Figures: F 1141, JH 510; Ploughman: F 1142, JH 512; Sower: F 1143, JH 509; Oxcart in the Snow: F 1144, JH 511." (Letter R 47)

"I very much enjoyed working on the six canvases I wrote you about, and now the painted sketches are finished, all six of them, and are already at my art lover's house; after he has copied them they will remain my property, and I am going to put some final touches of them. The subjects are ‘Farmers Planting Potatoes: F 41, JH 513; Shepherd with a Flock of Sheep: F 42, JH 517; Wood Gatherers in the Snow: F 43, JH 516; Potato Planting: F 172, JH 514". (Letter R48)

With this letter I send you photos of the posters the Museum is using to promote the exhibition at Plaza Loreto, where the art works are on exhibition.

"With a handshake in thought"
